Digital Pocket

There will be a feature called Digital Pocket. At time of writing this page, I could only think of 2 services that would benefit from this feature, but those two services will be invaluable. This segregation of money is intended to use funds exclusively for a particular role. This will allow the customer to use that digital pocket for that particular service, and nothing else.

For example, KTA will offer passes that a rider will be able to acquire. Those with funds in that particular digital pocket will get passes based on what they pay for. This could range from a 3 hour pass – a 365 day pass in particular increments. More information can be found on KTA‘s website. When boarding the bus, the rider will tap their ID card, and either pay for a pass, or use a current pass. Using a credit/debit card will not support passes. This will mean using a credit/debit card will cost the rider more money than just using the pass feature of the digital pocket in their ID.

Another example will be SNAP benefits as provided by HHS. Every month, the government will deposit a particular amount to the customer’s digital pocket. When going to the grocery store, the customer will insert their card into the reader, and select SNAP benefits rather than their bank account. Money will then be deducted from the SNAP’s digital pocket. A SNAP recipient can elect to have a SNAP card, but this will mean one more card to carry.

If there comes any other instance that a digital pocket will prove helpful, those would be noted here. The digital pocket is built into the ID card, and not the debit card. This means, the customer must use the ID card to benefit from it.
